Background

In 2015, the remote modular construction landscape was dominated by the 50/50 engineer shack, and we at Alta-Fab were a leader in this market. Our 50/50 engineer shack was the go-to choice for companies needing comfortable and functional remote workspaces. However, as the economy took a downturn in 2015, things came to a halt, and the industry had to downsize.

It wasn’t until 2018 that we made our resurgence, working with drilling companies and housing rig crews. Our original design for a 3-Suite Sleeper was an all-electric structure, tailored for the warm climate of Texas. We found success, selling some units in 2018 and 2019.

However, we realized that we needed to adapt to the changing needs of the market. We modified our units from electric to propane, making them more suitable for the Canadian environment. This strategic move made our products more appealing to a wider range of wellsite customers

It took a while for the next significant change to occur. It wasn’t until 2021 that the industry demanded something new – they wanted to accommodate more people in a single trailer for the same transport cost. This need gave birth to our 3-Suite Sleeper. Unlike the original sleepers, which often had limited amenities, these new units included fully-equipped kitchens. This addition provided occupants with a taste of home even in the most remote locations.

The 3 Sleeper

The 3-Suite Sleeper quickly gained traction in 2021 and became our new bread and butter. What sets them apart is the flexibility in layout options. The original layout is perhaps the most popular. It features a separate kitchen, a private bathroom, a desk, a bedroom, and a comfortable living space with a reclining chair. This layout offers a sense of home and separation between rooms, providing more privacy for the bedroom.

We also welcome customizations, allowing our clients to add their personal touches. This may include exterior logos, color schemes, some interior options, and custom floor plans, enabling our clients to differentiate their units from the rest.

One constant feature that’s always been part of our units since the 1990s is the BBQ component. People appreciate the added amenities for remote living, enabling them to cook a variety of foods, making their stay more enjoyable.

In terms of utility, we’ve doubled the water storage capacity compared to the older 50/50 shack, going from 400 gallons to a generous 800 gallons, ensuring occupants have access to essential resources in remote locations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our journey through the ups and downs of the remote modular construction industry is a testament to our adaptability and innovation. The 3-Suite Sleeper, with its versatile layouts, customizable options, and added amenities, is a reflection of our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our clients.
